Fun Facts About the California State Flag
The California flag was officially adopted in 1911 by the State Legislature. It is based on the Bear Flag, first flown in 1846 during the California revolt.
Legend has it that the red star is a nod to the Republic of Texas, and that the Grizzly symbolizes strength. Some argue that the star is actually a nod to the Bonnie Blue flag.
The flag was clarified in 1953, and it was officially designated as the Bear Flag at that time.
